GAC Jterm: Placing Valencia

Culture, Language, and Community-Based Learning in Spain

Welcome to the site of our Jterm experience: Placing Valencia. Learn about the different aspects of our experience.
Components of the course
GAC Jterm: Placing Valencia provides an integrated course schedule of learning through exploration, scrutiny, and self-reflection. Our classes combine hands-on experience with knowledge-based teaching.

Language component
Courses where local teachers guide students through: grammar review, practical exercises, and idiomatic expressions useful to interact with people in Valencia.

Local Culture of Valencia
Visits to local cultural sites where students familiarize themselves with the rich history and culture of Valencia.
Experiential Components
Learn while you live in Valencia
GAC Jterm: Placing Valencia provides students multiple activities to learn through immersing themselves in the life of Valencia for a month.

Community-Based Learning
Students work for three hours everyday supporting a local NGO. They complete different activities that provide some basic services to members of the community who are in need, but at the same time provide support and a sense of integration to local youths who are at risk of exclusion.

Host Families
Students stay with local families with whom they have the opportunity to practice everyday Spanish, as well as some everyday culture in Valencia: eating schedules, negotiating house rules, tone, and idiomatic expressions in a relaxed manner.

Weekly Conversations at Local Pub
Every Thursday students have a chance to practice their Spanish in a social environment at a local Pub. They interact with students from Valencia who want to practice or learn English, and with students from other countries who are studying or doing internships in Valencia.

Excursions
During the weekends the group goes on excursions that put Valencia in a larger context. Some excursions locate the city in relation to its region in the Comunidad Valenciana (Xativa, Morellia, and Sant Mateu), with other communities (like Catalonia, through a visit to Barcelona), and the center of the peninsula, Madrid and Toledo.
