A Linear Telling of La luz difícil

BY: Nicole Pfalz

In times of significant trauma or loss, it can be expected for the mind to jump from one thought to another instead of following a logical process.  Representative of the implications of grieving on memory is the novel La luz difícil by Tomás González (2011).  Originally written in Spanish, this piece of literature follows a very inconsistent timeline; the narrator is constantly altering the time and location of the plot mid-chapter, mid-paragraph, and even mid-sentence.  This strategic technique allows for the audience to follow the cognitive processes of David, the narrator, as his anguish and physical ailment alike serve as means of rising above his lifelong vulnerabilities.  By coding each instance in which David's thought changed, and rearranging each event to assure coherent ordering, one is able to piece together not only the story's sequential happening, but also the manner in which agony affects memory and one's means of coping.
